I'm Emily Dobell and I'm a Consultant in Public Health working as part of the London Health & Justice Learning Hub (HJLH). Starting out as a clinical doctor and then training in Public Health, I've worked on health strategies in a number of organisations including local government, the NHS and the UK Health Security Agency. I've always been motivated by opportunities to improve health outcomes for people who are socially excluded and to reduce inequalities in access to and experience of healthcare.
Being part of the London HJLH Hub is unlike any other work I've done. One of the most valuable aspects is my colleagues' vast knowledge of healthcare in relation to the criminal justice system - both from clinical and technical experience but also from lived experience of healthcare while resident in London prisons. We're very fortunate to have this unique viewpoint from which to learn from deaths in custody and help facilitate system change.
I hope to bring a focus on prevention of safety incidents, using what we learn to influence wider system partners and ensure that our impact outlives the Hub.
